Problem Statement

Our goal is to automate the process of profiling a ski core blank using a thickness planer

ABOUT

Vermont Tech is a proud owner of a professional grade ski press. There is also a club in place to design and build your own pair of skis at the college. Part of this process is taking a wood core blank and planing it into the desired profile. Currently this is done with a regular bench top planer and a homemade jig; the process is very time consuming.

Our project is all about automating this process for the user. We are retrofitting a benchtop planer to make it CNC controlled so the process of planing cores is more hands off. Students will be able to design ski profiles in SolidWorks, export their profile as G-Code and run that G-Code on our CNC Planer. Our system will then cut out the ski core profile and deliver a working core that can be pressed into a pair of skis. Within the pages of this site we will explain the engineering processes that we went through in order to create this project.
